They smell fresh bread, hear conversations around the tables, and enjoy a meal with family and friends. But the story behind this place runs much deeper. Long before Dutch Country Table opened its doors, the Bontrager family was already known for gathering people around food. Recently, we came across a newspaper article from 2016 featuring Salina Bontrager. At the time, Salina was 82 years old and had spent more than four decades preparing meals for large groups throughout the Kalona area. The article tells the story of her cooking Thanksgiving dinners, serving church groups, community organizations, businesses, and visitors from around the world. One detail especially stood out. Salina didn't start cooking for large groups because she dreamed of running a food business. She began in the 1970s simply to help support her family during difficult farm years. What started as a practical need became a lifelong ministry of hospitality. Over the years, she served thousands upon thousands of meals. Her menus weren't fancy. They were familiar. Roast beef. Ham. Homemade bread. Mashed potatoes. Pies. Tapioca pudding. The kind of food that reminds people of home. In the article, Salina mentioned that preparing food wasn't just about cooking. It was about serving people. Even after decades of work, she continued opening her home and kitchen to family, friends, church groups, and visitors. That spirit is something we want to carry forward at Dutch Country Table. While the building is new, the heart behind it is not. Every biscuit, every cup of coffee, every breakfast plate, and every lunch special is part of a tradition that has existed in this community for generations—a tradition of welcoming people, feeding them well, and creating a place where conversations happen around the table. We are grateful for families like the Bontragers who helped build the culture that makes Kalona special. And we're thankful for each of you who continue that story every time you walk through our doors. From Then to Now In 2016, Salina was still preparing Thanksgiving meals for large groups. Today, that same passion for hospitality continues through Dutch Country Table. While the methods may have changed, the goal remains the same: Serve good food. Welcome people warmly. Build community around the table. That's what Table Talk is all about. We'd Love to Hear From You Do you have memories of eating one of Salina's meals? Maybe a favorite family recipe, a story about Kalona, or a memory connected to the Bontrager family? Thank you for being part of the Dutch Country Table family.
